Energy - Biofuel projects in semi-arid regions, benefitting local farmers and the global climate (through carbon offset)

GEXSI has build up a comprehensive knowledge base and specialized expertise in pro-poor biofuel projects in semi-arid regions, with a particular focus on the perennial energy crop "Jatropha".

As of today, GEXSI is one of very few organizations that has consolidated and proven knowledge of the feasibility of jatropha biofuel projects in the developing world:

We observe the progress of approximately 15 jatropha projects worldwide with whom we are in contact, with two thirds being located in Sub-Saharan Africa
We mentor and coach currently 5 jatropha projects (to varying degrees) with a view to facilitate access to expert knowledge, suitable seeds, and finance
We have arranged for financing for a social jatropha enterprise in Tanzania which currently works with 2,000 smallholder farmers, with a view to scale up to 50,000 participating farmers.
We support a 300 ha community based jatropha pilot scheme in Madagascar that identifies ways to combine soil erosion protection with biofuel production in disadvantaged regions; building on the experience we now support the project design of a much larger initiative that aims to offset 90,000 tons of carbon emissions annually once it has reached its final stage.
GEXSI is a founding member of the roundtable for sustainable jatropha oils, initiated by BioX under the auspices of the Dutch government in September 2007
GEXSI has organized the dissemination of the very rare non-toxic jatropha seeds among like-minded organizations, and co-ordinated the first industrial jatropha oil milling test in Europe which took place with jatropha seeds of one of the GEXSI projects.

We work closely with leading local and international research center with a view to raise the knowledge on high yielding seeds and efficient farming models.
