Improving the Livelihoods for smallholder Farmers in Madagascar

Participatory training of smallholder farmers to implement sustainable agricultural methods in rainforest areas - improving livelihoods of local communities

The organization Fanatsarana ny Farim-piainana eny Ambanivohitra (FFA) works with smallholder farmers who live below the poverty line. The organization transfers know how on sustainable tropical farming from university research centers to local communities in remote villages in the region of Mananjary in the Eastern mountain range of Madagascar.

FFA works with the local population; by applying participatory trainings the organization basis their work directly on the needs of the people. No standard solutions are applied to real-live problems.

A new emphasis will be put on assisting local communities in improving the marketing and distribution schemes. FFA assists in introducing organic or fairtrade certification, to develop rainforest protection schemes co-financed via carbon credits and to increase the revenues from sales of agricultural products by accessing international markets. Products to exported are, among others, ginger, mangos, lychees, vanilla and pepper.

GEXSI strives to further support FFA in their ambition to expand their work through providing seed finance and to assist in setting up equitrade schemes with European partners.
