JSL Analavory is a Malagasy social business that has been at the forefront of researching through direct participation the viability of selected social business models.

The company aim is to trial new commercial ideas within the social business context as understood by Muhammad Yunus. That is, a company that is established to solve and/or mitigate social and environmental challenges, is environmentally sustainable and operates a fair pay scheme for the employees.  All company profits are reinvested back into the organisation to further its activities, and achieve greater social and environmental impacts.

In this context, the company has undertaken commercial trials in remote and poor regions of Madagascar with the following situation and products:

  • Soil erosion prevention through the cultivation of Jatropha;
  • Establishing a fair trade fruit company in remote Madagascar;
  • Protecting indigenous tree species by developing an essential oil enterprise.
