Current projects
GEXSI is currently engaged with projects based in sub-Saharan Africa. Here, we are focusing our energies on incubating projects that help to address persistent issues affecting the livelihoods and quality of life of people living in remote rural communities.
The key project for us has been the ‘Clean Fuels for Local Use’ initiative. The scheme, based in the Boeny Province, a remote region of north-west Madagascar has sought to provide local villagers and small transport businesses with clean fuels for transport or energy use under the condition of a self-sustaining business model to produce and market the clean fuels to local transport companies and to be able to cross-subsidise access to energy initiatives in the villages where the project operates.
The project has extensively researched the use of Jatropha tree (Jatropha curcas) for local production of bio fuel. An inedible seed-bearing tree, Jatropha is drought-resistant, and is also being used to rehabilitate degraded landscapes and prevent soil erosion.
This initiative is ongoing, and we are actively seeking further donors and sponsors to invest in our work here.
